Panel Beating Services Melbourne

Panel beating is the trade of returning a damaged car body to the shape it left the factory in. Not filling it until it looks close. Returning it. On a modern car that means measuring the structure against the manufacturer’s data, working the metal with the method that particular steel or aluminium calls for, and replacing only what the maker says cannot be repaired.

CA Autobody has been doing this at Chelsea Heights for more than thirty years. We are VACC approved, a manufacturer approved repairer for Tesla, BYD, Zeekr and Lexus, and an approved repairer for AAMI, RACV and NRMA. Every repair carries a lifetime warranty on parts for as long as you own the car.

What a panel beater actually does

The name is older than the job. Panel beaters once literally beat panels back into shape over a dolly. The hammer and dolly are still in the toolbox, but most of a modern panel beater’s day is measuring, deciding and joining.

A car body is now a deliberate structure. Different steels are used in different places so that some parts crumple and absorb energy while others stay rigid and protect the people inside. Mild steel can be worked and straightened. Ultra high strength steel usually cannot, because heating or pulling it destroys the property it was chosen for. Knowing which is which, on your particular car, is the job.

Working the metal

Shallow damage in a workable panel comes out with hammer and dolly, slide hammers, stud welding and shrinking. Heat is used sparingly and only where the material allows it, because too much changes the steel.

Measuring and pulling

If the structure has moved, guesswork is useless. The car goes on a bench, gets measured against the manufacturer’s data, and is pulled under control until the measurements come back. Then it is measured again.

Sectioning and replacement

Where the maker allows a partial replacement, we cut at the point the maker specifies and join with the method the maker specifies, whether that is spot welding, MIG brazing, rivet bonding or structural adhesive. Where the maker says the whole part goes, the whole part goes.

Knowing when not to beat a panel

A shallow dent with unbroken paint should not be beaten at all. It should be pushed out with paintless dent removal, which keeps the factory finish and costs less. A good panel beater tells you that.

What we repair

Aluminium and mixed material bodies

More cars now mix aluminium panels and castings into a steel structure, and the two metals cannot share a workshop bay or a set of tools. Aluminium dust in a steel repair causes corrosion later. Aluminium also work hardens fast, has far less memory than steel, and often needs controlled heat to move at all. We keep the processes separate, which is one of the things a manufacturer approval audits.

How a repair runs, start to finish

Quote

Bring the car in or send photos. We quote on what we can see and tell you honestly what might be hiding behind it, because that is the usual reason a repair runs over.

Booking and drop off

We book the car in when the parts are on hand rather than letting it sit in our yard waiting. We offer free pickup and drop off valet in our service area, and replacement vehicles if you need to keep moving.

Strip and measure

Panels off, structure measured. This is where anything hidden shows up, and where we come back to you if the picture has changed.

Metal work

Straightening, sectioning, welding, bonding. Done to the method the manufacturer sets for that joint and that material.

Paint

Colour matched to the panel in front of us and blended into the neighbours. See spray painting and colour matching for how that works.

Reassembly, calibration and quality check

Everything back together, safety systems recalibrated where the repair disturbed them, panel gaps and finish checked under proper light, and the car cleaned before you see it.

Why people choose us

More than thirty years at it

Long enough to have seen most things, and long enough that a lot of our work is repeat customers and referrals.

VACC approved

The Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce sets the standard for the trade in this state, and VACC approval means we are held to it.

Manufacturer approved for Tesla, BYD, Zeekr and Lexus

Four makers have audited our equipment, our training and our methods. Those standards apply to every car that comes through, not only to theirs.

Lifetime warranty on parts

For as long as you own the vehicle. We also hold a 4.9 Google rating across more than 350 reviews.

Insurance work

We are an approved repairer for AAMI, RACV and NRMA and work with every major insurer. Many Victorian policies include choice of repairer or let you request it, so if you want us, say so to your insurer and we will handle it from there. If the accident was not your fault you usually have a free choice, and our accident assistance page covers how that works.

Our workshop is at 7 Ashley Park Drive, Chelsea Heights. We look after Chelsea, Cheltenham, Mentone, Mordialloc, Carrum Downs, Parkdale, Aspendale and the rest of the bayside and peninsula suburbs listed on our areas we serve page.

Common questions about panel beating

What is panel beating?

It is the repair and reshaping of a vehicle’s body panels and structure after damage, using hammers, dollies, pulling equipment, welding and bonding to return the car to its original shape and dimensions.

What do panel beaters do that a mechanic does not?

A mechanic works on what makes the car go. A panel beater works on the body and the structure: the parts that hold their shape in a crash and keep the people inside safe.

Do panel beaters paint cars?

In a workshop like ours, yes, though they are two different trades under one roof. The panel beater gets the shape right and the painter gets the colour and finish right. See spray painting.

How long does panel beating take?

A single panel is usually a few days. Structural work runs into weeks, and parts availability often decides it rather than the repair itself. We give you a time frame after the car has been stripped and assessed.

How much does panel beating cost?

It depends entirely on what moved and what has to be replaced. Quotes are free, and we would rather give you an honest number than a low one you find out about later.

Can you repair rust?

Yes. Done properly it means cutting out the affected metal and letting in new, not grinding it back and filling it. Filler over rust comes back within a year or two.

Can you match my paint?

Yes, and we match to your panel rather than to the paint code alone, because paint fades with sun and age.

Is it worth repairing a small dent?

Often, and often not the way people expect. If the paint is intact, paintless dent removal is usually cheaper, faster and better for resale than a repair and respray.

Other work we do

Alongside panel beating we handle smash repairs, spray painting, paintless dent removal, accident assistance and replacement vehicles, and we are an approved repairer for Tesla and Zeekr.
